It's Never Too Late...

Strengthen the Individual:

At Pushing Boundaries we work with clients (not to be confused with patients) in the same way most mainstream personal trainers work with clients. Exercises are utilized that encourage motor responses in previously thought non-functioning muscles and build on the existing level of motor activity. The expectation for the recovery of "Activities of Daily Living" (be it walking, rolling over in bed, or improving transferring skills) is realized by re-establishing motor pathways and/or strengthening existing signals.

To address these issues, Pushing Boundaries provides a variety of exercise therapies such as body-weight-supported treadmill walking, computerized electrical muscle stimulation cycling and visualization-activation muscle training.

  • The utilization of the latest exercise techniques and equipment for people who are paralyzed.
  • A complete exercise based evaluation upon starting your program and three month evaluations thereafter to document progress.
  • Individualized programs developed for each client with progress tracked and recorded throughout program.
  • Body weight supported treadmill ambulation training.
  • Communication with your current therapy and medical team (upon your request) to ensure everyone involved with your care stays informed.
  • Full body exercise and movement programs that enhance range of motion (ROM), flexibility and strength while decreasing tone and spasticity.
  • Core strength and trunk stabilization training.
  • Subsidy available on a first come, first serve basis for those who qualify (subject to availability).

Support the Family:

There's more to Pushing Boundaries than just exercising. On average, there are a dozen people involved with the care of an individual living with paralysis. Aside from the medical team, they are mothers, fathers, siblings, extended family, paid caregivers, and friends. Many initially find themselves without the tools or information necessary to adapt this new, and yes, scary, situation.

We provide a place for caregivers to share ideas, learn new skills, provide support and to become part of a community where everyone understands and encourages.

Educate the Community:

No one knows when they will be touched by paralysis. Either you or someone you know may suffer and injury or illness that will result in paralysis at some level.  By providing information about our services, we ensure that our community’s needs are addressed.

We provide:

  • Research opportunities for local universities
  • Educational seminars for university level Exercise Science Programs
  • Community presentations
